Lee M. Smith serves as Co-President, Co-Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer of Flagstar Bank, N.A. In this role, he is responsible for oversight of accounting and finance, treasury, investor relations, corporate real estate and vendor management, mortgage banking, human resources, information technology, and operations.
Prior to that, Mr. Smith served as President of Mortgage Banking, overseeing mortgage sales and originations, servicing, and operations and developing strategies for growing the business. He was also responsible for capital markets and mortgage finance, including warehouse and MSR lending, mortgage banking, cash and treasury management services.
Mr. Smith joined Flagstar in 2013 as Chief Operating Officer, where he played an integral role in the Company's turnaround. He also oversaw several key business units, including mortgage servicing, strategy, balance sheet and cost optimization, and mergers and acquisitions.
Prior to joining Flagstar, he was a partner at MatlinPatterson Global Advisers LLC, a New York-based private equity fund, where he managed portfolio companies across multiple industries and served on several boards.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Smith was a senior director at Zolfo Cooper LLC, an advisory and interim management firm. Additionally, he served as a vice president in Ernst & Young’s national restructuring group in New York and the United Kingdom.
Mr. Smith serves on several boards and committees, including Cranbrook School, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and Business Leaders for Michigan. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
